RAPE: Governors’ Forum Declares State of Emergency on Sexual and Gender-based Violence

The 36 Governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum has Declare a State of Emergency on Sexual and Gender-based Violence in the country. 
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of  Ekiti state Dr. Kayode Fayemi stated this at the end of the 10th covid-19 teleconference meeting with his colleagues.
The Governors strongly condemned all forms of  violence against women and children and call on State Governors that have not domesticated gender-based protection laws to domesticate them  to  increase protection for women and children and ensure speedy investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of such crime.
On the decision of President to postpone the formal publication of Executive Order 10 of  2020 in the Official Gazette to enable further consultations among all stakeholders, the Governors through a Committee  by the Vice Chairman of the  Forum, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, says it would continue meeting with the delegation of the Conference of Speakers and other stakeholders to work out modalities for resolving the issues amicably.
The Governors reiterate the position of members that the proposed Control of  Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020 for the governors to take  into account the crucial role of State Governments within  the  federal system in responding to pandemics in the country. 
Governors want to be conferred with the powers, among others to, declare any place within their State an infected area; make regulations and directives towards prevention and further spread of an infectious disease within their  States; establish States’ Centers for Disease Control while the discretionary powers of the  President and the Director General of  NCDC as contained in the proposed Bill should be reviewed.
